DREAM THEATER's JOHN PETRUCCI Says MIKE MANGINI Is 'Totally Settled' In His Role Behind The Kit
TeamRock Radio conducted an interview with guitarist John Petrucci of progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER at the U.K. edition of the Sonisphere festival, which was held July 4-6 at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire. You can now watch the chat below. Asked how drummer Mike Mangini is settling in nearly four years after joining DREAM THEATER as the replacement for Mike Portnoy, Petrucci said: "He's totally settled. Yeah, he is just really, really on it 100 percent. This is our second album with him and second world tour, and he's one of the family and just… He has a lot to handle on his plate — as the drummer, there's a lot of responsilbiity, and he just handles it in stride. So he's great." In an interview with Myglobalmind, Petrucci stated about Mangini: "We auditioned a lot of great drummers [back at the end of 2010]; every one of them was world-class. We had a lot of fun playing with each of them and had some great jams. With Mike, it was just something really special about what was going on. First and foremost, with everybody, we wanted to see if they can pull off the songs, play them correctly, and that they it felt right musically. That's something Mike did; it felt like the band. He really gets the style and delivers in a powerful metal way. He has all the techniques, chops and sensibility; everything just flows musically. Over and above that, there were a few things, like his attitude and dedication to wanting to get everything exactly right, as well as genuinely wanting the position. Not just wishy-washy, 'Yeah, if I get it, great. If not, OK too.' Personality wise, we are all kindred spirits. I've said this before; if we ever went to high school together, we would have been friends. He is just one of us. We felt that immediate connect. He the right fit on every level." Speaking to The AU Review, DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan Rudess stated about having Mangini involved in the songwriting process for the band's new, self-titled CD: "Well, it was really interesting having Mangini there for the whole process. One part of the situation was that he's a very upbeat, energized guy, so just having that personality in the room with us was a good experience for all of us. On a musical level, you know, Mike has one of the most incredible rhythmic minds, I think, of anybody. So he was kind of able to conceptualize these kind of concepts that we would just take and try to compose around. We got some really interesting results form doing that — it was fascinating for us because everyone in DREAM THEATER has a good sense of rhythm, but we never before in our history have had this kind of input where someone would say, "Petrucci, if you play a bar of seven ten times, and Jordan, if you repeat something in five and I play this, it'll all come together" — you know, we would all just smile, because it was some pretty cool wacky stuff that was just purely conceptualized by Mike. And, you know, I guess what helped the most with the writing process was just his drumming — you know, having him be there for the writing, so we could try something and have him do his thing on the drums which would lead us to compose differently." DREAM THEATER's latest, self-titled album sold around 34,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 7 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on September 24, 2013 via Roadrunner.
TED NUGENT Slams Critics As 'Unclean Vermin' Who Are Upset By His 'Positive Energy'
Outspoken rocker Ted Nugent, who is known for causing a stir with his colorful comments, has slammed his critics as "unclean vermin" who are "upset by [his] positive energy." Earlier this week, it was reported that an Idaho Native American tribe had canceled one of Nugent's concerts because of the legendary guitarist's "racist and hate-filled remarks." "The Motor City Madman" was scheduled to perform for Couer D'Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho on August 4. But after the Southern Poverty Law Center informed the tribe about Nugent's controversial comments and stances, the show was scrapped. Nugent's July 26 concert at the Waterfest in Oshkosh, Wisconsin generated controversy last month when a group of the city's residents started a petition on MoveOn.org to have the show canceled. The petition has since been taken down. "I take it as a badge of honor that such unclean vermin are upset by me and my positive energy," Nugent told Gannett Wisconsin Media. "Put your heart and soul into everything you do and nobody can stop you. Sometimes you give the world the best you got and you get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you got anyway." He added: "By all indicators, I don't think they actually qualify as people, but there has always been a lunatic fringe of hateful, rotten, dishonest people that hate happy, successful people. I believe raising hell and demanding accountability from our elected employees is Job One for every American. I am simply doing my job." In March, the city of Longview, Texas paid $16,000 to end contract negotiations with Nugent, who was under consideration as the headliner for the city's Fourth of July celebration (a verbal agreement required paying Nugent half his guaranteed performance fee of about $32,000).
